Our commitment

Buzzbo exists to make the world more accessible, so this website must be too. We aim to meet - and where possible exceed - the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 level AA.

What we've built in

  • Full keyboard navigation with clearly visible focus indicators, and a skip-to-content link on every page.
  • Semantic HTML landmarks, labelled forms and status announcements for screen readers.
  • A minimum text size of 16px everywhere, in the highly legible Lexend Deca typeface (designed to improve reading proficiency).
  • Colour contrast of at least 4.5:1 for all text (cream #F8F7F2 on sage green #556B4D measures 5.4:1).
  • Respect for your reduced-motion system preference - animations are disabled automatically.
  • Built-in controls to enlarge the text and switch to a high-visibility colour theme, remembered on your device.
  • Layouts that reflow to 320px wide and support 200% zoom without loss of content.

Using Buzzbo

Buzzbo works with the accessibility tools you already use, and adds a few of its own. Here's how to get the most comfortable experience.

Built-in text size and colour themes

Every page has a floating accessibility button in the bottom-right corner (the person icon). Open it to make the text Large or Larger, and to switch the whole site to a higher-visibility colour theme: white on black, yellow on black, black on yellow, or dark blue on yellow. Your choice is remembered on that device and applies across the whole site, so you only need to set it once.

Changing text size in your browser

You can also zoom the whole page using your browser. On Windows, press Ctrl and + to zoom in, Ctrl and - to zoom out, and Ctrl and 0 to reset. On a Mac, use Cmd in place of Ctrl. Buzzbo's layout reflows cleanly up to 200% zoom without content being cut off or overlapping.

Getting around with a keyboard

You can use the whole site without a mouse. Press Tab to move forward through links, buttons and form fields, Shift and Tab to move back, Enter to follow a link or activate a button, and Space to tick checkboxes. A visible outline always shows where you are, and a "Skip to main content" link appears first on every page so you can jump straight past the menu.

Using a screen reader

Buzzbo is built and tested to work with the common screen readers, including VoiceOver (built into iPhone, iPad and Mac), NVDA and JAWS on Windows, and TalkBack on Android. Headings, landmarks, form labels and buttons are all properly named, and search results are available as a plain accessible list as well as on the map.

If you don't yet have a screen reader on Windows, NVDA is a great place to start: it's completely free and open-source, unlike JAWS, which is paid commercial software. You can download NVDA at nvaccess.org.

Known limitations

  • The interactive map view is still in development; all map results are also available as an accessible list.
  • Provider-uploaded flyer images may lack full text alternatives - we require providers to duplicate key information as text.

Testing

We test with automated accessibility tooling (axe-core, via Lighthouse) and keyboard navigation throughout development; our pages currently pass an automated axe-core scan with no WCAG 2.1 AA issues. Manual screen-reader testing with VoiceOver and NVDA is being carried out ahead of launch.
