Quiet sessions, relaxed screenings and sensory-friendly days out this October half-term (October half-term 2026)
Most of England is off school from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026, and the best-dated quiet sessions fall on Tuesday 27 October (Barnsley Museums) and Sunday 1 November (five SEA LIFE centres). Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Bromley started a two-week break on 19 October, and Leicester is off from 19 to 23 October. Every item below has a 2026 date on the venue's own page. Most sessions are pre-booked and numbers are limited, so book early and check your child's school dates.

How quiet sessions and relaxed screenings work
- Book ahead, even if it is included. Every SEA LIFE quiet session we found is a pre-booked, online-only ticket, and numbers are limited. There is usually no walk-in entry.
- Check whether it is the first hour or the last. SEA LIFE Birmingham and Scarborough run quiet sessions at the start of the day, while Weymouth, Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth use the end of the day. Pick the one that suits your child's energy.
- Know what quiet means at each venue. At SEA LIFE it mainly means music, hand dryers and TVs switched off. Barnsley Museums turn interactives and audio down but cannot switch off a few motion-sensor exhibits or promise a quiet day.
- Use the visual story. Gunnersbury Park Museum offers a sensory map and visual story before you go, and SEA LIFE London links a sensory guide. Looking at these together the day before can help.
- Bring your CEA card to the cinema. Vue accepts the CEA card at all UK venues so your carer can get a free ticket, and you can book online, in person or by phone.
- Ask for ear defenders on the day. SEA LIFE Manchester and Hunstanton lend ear defenders on request, and Barnsley Museums lend sensory backpacks with ear defenders from the front desk.

Frequently asked questions
What is an autism-friendly screening and how does it work?
Cineworld and Vue both describe reduced sound, dimmed lighting and no adverts or trailers, and you are free to move around or make noise. Vue runs them every Monday between 4pm and 7pm and on the last Sunday of each month with a family film, which is Sunday 25 October 2026.
What is a quiet hour or Quiet at the Aquarium session? Do I need to book?
It is a calmer session at a SEA LIFE centre for autistic visitors and people with sensory needs. Music, hand dryers and TVs are switched off or turned down, and some centres limit numbers. You must book online in advance.
When is the quietest time to visit SEA LIFE this half-term?
Book a dedicated quiet session. SEA LIFE Manchester runs them every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm, and Birmingham, Scarborough, Weymouth, Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth all have one on Sunday 1 November 2026.
What is a relaxed performance or relaxed opening?
It is a performance or museum opening with a more relaxed approach to noise and movement. Barnsley Museums, for example, turn interactives and audio down and book no school groups on relaxed days. What changes varies by venue, so check the venue's page or ask.
Can I borrow ear defenders or a sensory bag?
Often, yes. SEA LIFE Manchester and Hunstanton lend ear defenders on request, and Barnsley Museums lend sensory backpacks with ear defenders and sunflower lanyards.
What can I do with my autistic child when the half-term dates are different?
Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Bromley are off from 19 to 30 October and Leicester from 19 to 23 October, so the Airhop SEN session on 19 October and the Calke Abbey relaxed storytelling on 23 October fall in their holidays. Always check your child's own school dates.
